I wrote this while I worked at May Company in June ’83. I remember being infatuated with a girl named Kim B., and attempting to ask her out on my first day there. She was engaged to be married, so it wasn’t very promising. I spent many hours watching her, and one day, my anguish led to some candid lyrics which I remember writing down while I stood working at the counter in the department store’s basement level… oh such a glamorous job I had.
The lyrics to this piece in 3/4 time were about her… because I included the line, “Writing it all down as it’s happening,” as it was all happening around me and I had managed to capture lyrics and words in a stolen moment, in that very way.
Ultimately I was proud of that piece. It was very Cure-like, with a guitar pattern based on their song “In Your House.”
