As I tried to come up with something to put on the B-side of a cassette for my cousin Daniel (who inspired me to learn the guitar), in the summer of 1981, I began to ad-lib some stuff on guitar, just me playing, as had been the style of our little “international cassette exchanges” until then.
I played this exactly as is, then stopped the tape and transcribed it for future use. I wanted the drums to be very Ringo-ish, because I knew that most drummers would have some sort of problem with the idea, and that therefore it must be a pretty good idea. Within the year, it became one of the pieces that I rehearsed live with John Matthew.
