Gorillas In The Midst just evolved from another one of my “Nutty Boy” melodies, which had been running through my head, and which later on I found had been inspired by the Flying Lizards tune, Russia. It got its title in ’88 when I used to drive to work along Sunset Blvd. each day, and suddenly came upon the billboard for the film of the same name, which immediately struck me as hilarious because it instantly suggested the Madness-style lyric which I ended up putting on my answering machine a few days later. It had exactly the same impact on me for three days in a row… The response to my phone message was unanimously uplifting.
