I began this in August 1979, on the train ride from Geneva to Paris. I remember writing the words and feeling somewhat self-conscious about the fact that all these strangers around me were sitting there, looking out of the window, doing nothing. I kept feeling paranoid that the fat man sitting next to me would turn out to be some sort of Swiss music critic and what would start as a casual reading of my words over my shoulder might end up a critical debate. I was very private about my all my lyrics at the time, I definitely didn’t want to give anything away about myself through my words, especially of a personal nature. Come on… I was fifteen.
It was my first song. I’ve been revising it ever since, trying to keep it up to date. It made its first release on 1991’s Acousticuriosity, after being significantly reworked.
