My point was to make a word collage, somewhat inspired by the surrealism in Wire’s lyrics or even influenced by a Depeche Mode style. I conceived the idea to write the cleverest words possible, and then do it all myself, then say it was somebody else’s voice and see what people said. Verses went like so:
You’re big and balloony
I’m sinking so sue me
Another boy injured
In the course of his duty
It’s pitch black to me
Yer olive-skinned beauty
Ovulate or oscillate
It’s all the same to me
The olive-skinned beauty was Annette S. All the quirky rhymes of the verses were to be offset by the sarcasm of the chorus:
The ones that procreate are the ones at whom you shake your fist
Getting what they want is at the top of the shopping list
Told her what to write but she have trouble spelling it
You know the girls you date are not rocket scientists.
I decided around January ’92 that the “Heralding the Death” album was not going to take off in its present form, that it was a bit dark, and too amateur-sounding to represent me adequately. I put these two songs in place of “In the Air” and “Dog on Ecstasy,” and the tone of the album became instantly more crossover.
“The Kiss of Fear” started off as a witty lyric for “Rocket Scientists” mixing that with the baggy beat of the Sugarcubes’ “Hit.”
The ones that procreate are the ones at whom you shake your fist
Getting what you want has never been atop the shopping list
Tell her what to write but she have trouble spelling it
I tell you that the girls you date are not rocket scientists.
This was originally offered as advice to a friend, who had come to me with a dilemma in being attracted to women whom he later discovered lacked something in the brains department.
I can also hear this one with a remixed chorus so that it builds better… The vocals were all over the place, and therefore left out on this mix. A piece of “clever” (read witty) dark techno at its most playful…
