The song title is a wordplay based on the literal translation for “glove compartment” which in French is “Boite a Gants” but which Marie misinterpreted as “Belgian Nightclub” (Boite a Gent). I wanted to work this word-game into a song about night life in clubs.
The lyric then became “Glove compartment of love, compartment of love” which stood to sound a bit more cool, but is possibly one of the worst lyrics ever written!
I finally took the music, which I had already recorded and written as a New Order influenced disco piece, and in August 1991 found the perfect line “Don’t let them change you” which was more relevant (and easier to sing).
