On August 20, I wrote Lurking Sinister around a series of repeating guitar riffs which I had been improvising during this period, when I collected little musical scraps and put them onto cassettes to give them to my friend Anne. It later became more interesting, with the free-form bass line playing solo at the end over a sustaining synth chord.
At that time, my recording technology was limited to a cassette player with two mic inputs in the front and a stereo. I would plug the synth directly into the left one (often risking serious input overload), and a room mic on the right, picking up my guitar amp and the keyboard’s other output, which was plugged into the amp’s second input.
