During the months of late 1983-early 1984, John Matthew and I started rehearsing a couple of live tunes. We did some reggae-based pop songs, and the goal was to get them recorded. We ended up involving a lyricist named Kim, a friend of John’s, who said he was interested in singing on it.
Personally, it was kind of a dismal experience having someone else misinterpret my music, lyrically. At this point, I became convinced that I wanted to write all my own lyrics from then on… “I just don’t know why I can’t stop loving you… ” (ohhh… Aaaargh…)
Having finished Piece No. 1, we started another tune with a programmed bass part. The democratics of writing with a partner was truly the most taxing part.
