This song was written in 1985 about people’s tendencies to rationalize their attraction as love; it was written and programmed with the assistance of Chris Shaw after the initial studio projects had been completed. He brought it into shape after I played him 3 completely separate ideas. I wanted to make it as commercial as Scritti Politti.
Later I drew a graphic to symbolize what I figured would convey this meaning: a bridge in four sections, with each portion numbered, and a legend at the bottom corresponding to each of the four songs that would make up a 12″ single entitled Bridges to Desire. It marked my first interest in doing the graphic design for my record sleeves.
